Getting the Most Out of Your Education: Online Masters Degree

Online Master's degrees are degrees that are obtained by taking most of your classes online. They can be obtained from almost any school and carry the same weight as if you took the courses on campus.

1. Online Masters Degree - Overview

Online Masters Degree - Overview Online Master's degrees are degrees that are obtained by taking most of your classes online. They can be obtained from almost any school and carry the same weight as if you took the courses on campus. Online degrees can be convenient and they can also be costly. A master's degree is typically a degree that is obtained after the bachelor's degree is obtained. Students can take about two years to complete this degree provided they continuously take classes and pass them. Some schools claim that you can complete it in less time. The online degree allows small schools to offer degrees even if they don't have the necessary money to offer degrees the traditional way. It also offers them a way to expand any degree programs they currently have.

2. Types of Schools that offer Online Master Degrees

Today you can obtain an online master's degree from almost all of the schools that are in existence. Some smaller schools may not offer online courses due to their personal budgets or some other reason. Schools today are graded levels `A' and down and most of them from all grades offer some sort of online degree. Some schools only offer online courses because they are a bit less expensive to administer. Online courses don't have an actual real estate location to pay for therefore rental of a facility is eliminated. This rental is replaced with rental of a host for the website and the different features on this website such as the message board and chat room. The professor can also conduct class whenever he or she is more available. In an actual facility there is a time frame that the professor can be in the class room. Other schools offer the online master's degree as an extra option for students.

3. Online Master Degree Requirements

Online Master Degree Requirements To obtain an online master's degree, students have to qualify for classes the same way they would for a traditional course in which they actually take classes on campus. Normally the online master degree program would ask for an application, recommendations, and also the specific test for the type of degree the student is trying to obtain. For example the GMAT may be required for those students seeking a Master's degree in business. Like other traditional degree programs the online degree program will require a student to have obtained either their high bachelor's degree but this degree doesn't have to be in the same concentration as the degree the student is seeking a master's degree in. For example anyone who has a bachelor's degree can attend a school and obtain a master's degree in business.

A student who wants to obtain their master's degree online would also have the extra requirement of having internet access, an email address, and a compatible computer. The compatible computer can be a variety of things and the individual school will inform you about what is needed. The school will normally let you know everything you need before you even apply.

A student may also need to pay an application fee and/or an evaluation fee. The evaluation fee can be a fee the school charges so that they can look over your paperwork and let you know your chances of being accepted into their program. The application fee is just a fee for applying to the school.

4. What to Expect?

Online degrees have to have a different way of teaching the students. Like the traditional way of teaching, there is a teacher or professor in this case that outlines the course. The professor offers the students a syllabus which outlines all of the homework assignments, papers, and tests that will be required throughout the course. The syllabus also indicates what grades and percentages would get the student a certain grade. For example a 70% will constitute a C but a 90% may be an A. The professor decides on what percentage is which grade. Class participation is also very important to an online degree. This is due to students not being face to face with one another during most of the discussions. Students can participate by responding to a certain amount of comments and questions that others place on the message board.

The professor also sets up some sort of a chat room and message board. The chat room is like most chat rooms you see online where the different students can log in and talk live. Normally the chat room is used when the professor wants to teach and train his students in a live setting so that they can have their questions answered immediately and students can talk live to both the professor and each other. The message board is used for the professor to post questions and topics for discussion to the other students. Students can log in at any time day or night and answer questions.

The professor will also use these chat rooms, message boards, and email for students to turn in homework assignments and papers. The online course and the use of the internet make it convenient for students to interact with the professor, interact with each other, and to turn in assignments and papers.

Online students also tend to have group projects that are designed to familiarize them with the controls of the online course as well as with the other students. Professors tend to have several group projects to encourage students in team work and in learning how to use the different ways of online communication.

5. Financial Aid

Financial Aid Most degree programs are accredited both nationally and regionally which will provide more choices for financial aid possibilities. The master's degree allows students receive student loans in order to pay for their education. Grants from the state and government aren't offered because they are only for those who have not obtained a bachelor's degree at the time of the application. Some online degree programs are smaller programs and may not accept federal and/or student financial aid in the form of loans or grants but they may offer some other sort of financial aid. These schools may accept monthly payments or they may also accept employer payments for those employees who have a tuition reimbursement plan at their current job. Other schools also offer this but it is normally considered an alternative to financial aid provided by student loans and grants. Online courses tend to be less expensive due to the lack of overhead such as facility rental fees.

6. Types of Online Master Degrees

Types of Online Master Degrees Master degrees can be in almost in category and they depend upon the school. Some common types of master degrees are business degrees, art & science degree, health care, and education. Some other versions of this can also be found at different colleges and universities. For example the business degree may not include accounting and marketing. These two degrees may be completely separate from the business category and have categories of their own.

An online master's degree in business can be general business or the student can major in a type of business. There are all types of business degrees. The most widely used type of degree is the general business degree. This degree allows the student to take approximately an equal amount of classes in all of the different business offerings. For example the student will take marketing, accounting, law, and finance classes but wont have a specialization in either one. The online business degree has a wide variety of specializations ranging from economics to finance, and international business to e-commerce. The different offerings depend on the school. The most widely used master's degree in business is the MBA which stands for the Master of Business Administration. This is the equivalent to a general degree but on the master level.

An online master's degree in arts & science can range from history and English to health and criminal justice. Sometimes the health category is also a separate offering due to the various types of health degrees you can obtain. For example you can specialize in nursing, veterinarian studies, oncology, or a vast amount of others. The master's degree normally includes classes in business law, economics, accounting, marketing, finance, and possibly entrepreneurship or some sort of computer applications course. The computers application course is basically learning how to use the latest software programs and technology so that a business can be run or managed easier.

An online degree in education is also a popular one. Education is essential to a great foundation and more and more schools are offering the online education master's degree. Education can be separated into many different categories such as early childhood development and secondary education. The education degree offers a degree for elementary school, pre-k, middle school, high school, as well as post secondary education. The master's degree in education also opens up a chance for its students to become principles at different schools and also has become a requirement for those seeking to become professors.

An online degree in Human Resources can also be obtained. Human resources deal with hiring, firing, and retaining employees. This is also an aspect of business but is often separated from the business degree or the student can specialize in it. This type of degree is an important part of business today because without good quality employees, virtually every business will suffer. An online Human Resources degree will teach students how and where to find quality employees, what type of compensation to offer them so that they will be less likely to leave, and what type of work environment is essential to employees being about to work comfortably. Human Resources also play a role in safety and other employee laws. This department oversees that the rest of the company is complying with safety laws and labor laws. They also deal with any union employees if applicable.

7. Advantages of an Online Master's Degree

Advantages of an Online Master's Degree One key advantage to an online degree is that you have the flexibility to attend classes at anytime. You can attend day or night and for as long as you need. You can log on for an hour or for five minutes. Most professors just want their students to log on and complete the assignments, they normally don't care how much time it takes to do that.

Another advantage is that you can choose a school in a completely different location without leaving your home. You can go to school in the UK but still reside and physically be in the US. Online courses and degrees offer the flexibility needed to attend a college or university you may have always wanted to attend but felt like you couldn't afford to live in the country, city, town, or state that it is in.

Online degrees also tend to be less expensive then the traditional degrees. This is due to less overhead in administering and managing the degree program. There is also fewer personnel needed to run an online course then one that is conducted in a live facility.

Normally an online degree program includes books and materials for the course. The administrators of the program understand that the student may not be conveniently located to a bookstore so they provide the service of mailing the books and materials to the student. The traditional supplies such as pen, paper, notebooks, etc. are still the responsibility of the student but the student will no longer have to wait for long lines so that he or she can obtain their books.

Like most degree programs the professor offers the students a syllabus which tells the student what the professor expects of them throughout the course. The syllabus can provide the student with a way to get ahead of the class. The student can use the syllabus to plan ahead. For example if the student knows that he or she will be away on vacation then he or she can do homework assignments in advance and send them to the professor earlier rather then later. This would be appreciated more by the professor than the student waiting until it is too late to inform the professor of their potential absence.

Another advantage is that online degree programs may offer more variety for the student then the traditional ones. For example a school may offer a course in e-commerce only online. This would make sense because e-commerce is an online concept and the best way to learn about it is via the internet. Students may also encounter classes that are more suited to their needs online then in traditional schools. For example a student may want to learn a particular type of electronic repairs but it is only offered online because there aren't enough students who have requested this course in the past.

Another advantage is that the tuition for an online degree normally would not change based upon the location of the student. Students who attend a traditional college or university have different tuition rates, those that live within the state of the college or university typically pay less then those who live outside of the state. The online degree programs typically come up with a reasonable tuition amount for all students except for those in a different country.

An obvious advantage is that a degree whether it be online or traditional can open up more career doors and give its recipient more options and a higher salary. A master's degree is a great asset to its recipient in that it shows dedication as intelligence in a specific field.

8. Disadvantages of an Online Master's Degree

Disadvantages of an Online Master's Degree One disadvantage is that the student doesn't have the professor in front of them when a question arises. Students will either have to email the professor, call him or her, post a question on the message board, or use some other means of communication so that they can get their questions answered.

Another disadvantage is that some online degree providers are smaller schools and they don't offer the same types of financial aid options as bigger ones do. Students may have to come out of their pockets first before they can attend the school. This may only be for a percentage of the tuition but it may be a burden on a student whose income is very low.

Another disadvantage can be that the professor may require a student to log in a certain amount of times per week or for a certain period of time per day. This too can be a burden on a busy student who has tried to incorporate their education with a full time job either outside or inside the home.

Online degree programs can easily become a burden if you are an extremely business adult. Sometimes you may feel too tired to attend online classes and you may put it off until the next day but the next day may never come. Online degree programs require a lot of independent reading so the student should make sure they can set aside time to read the materials.

9. Precautions

Precautions Potential students should make sure that the online degree program or programs they are applying for are actual programs. Students can check out schools on the better business bureau and they can verify their accreditation.

Students can also ask others about their experiences with online degrees. They can also visit local colleges and inquire about whether or not they offer online degrees. Most colleges are happy to provide information about their programs to potential students in the hopes that you will choose their program over others. Talking to them over the phone to obtain their accreditation information is also not unheard of.
